You may agree with her political views. Fine. But have you examined the way in which she operates?

I try not to examine a politician’s personal life with a microscope because I believe it’s possible to serve the public well even if you have made mistakes in your personal life. Sadly, we live in a world now where even our childhood mistakes can be brought out of the dark, dusty closet and paraded around for the world to see. I do however take a closer look at a politician’s personal life if it reveals a pattern of behavior that could be a problem during public service.

Wendy Davis, who is running for governor of Texas, had details of her personal life revealed that added more questions to my iffy opinion of her. Her second ex husband made claims about her using him for his money to get through law school while he raised their little girls. One of which was from a previous, short marriage. He then claimed that she left him on the same day that her law school student loan was paid off. Probably just a coincidence.

Last summer she filibustered in the Texas Senate to show her opposition of House Bill 2. You would’ve thought she cured cancer with the attention she received and boy did she bask in it. Pageant hair, pageant smile, and pageant poise made her appear to be the perfect candidate to represent her party in the Governor’s race. A beautiful woman with sudden popularity running against a boring white man. Sounds perfect! The problem is appearances can be deceiving. All signs point to her being nothing more than an opportunist and I’ll tell you why.

Abortion Law HB 2 passed and was signed by Governor Perry on July 18, 2013. Wendy Davis begged for attention by saying it was taking away a woman’s right to choose abortion, that it’s part of the #WarOnWomen, and so on and so forth. You know all the token talking points by now.

However, HB 2 doesn’t make elective abortion illegal until after 20 weeks because studies show that the fetus can feel pain after that point. That seems pretty reasonable. It also requires that the physician performing the abortion have admitting privileges at a hospital no more than 30 miles away. Makes sense to me.  It also requires abortion facilities to meet the standards of ambulatory surgery centers. So….they want you to have an abortion in a super clean environment?? That sounds pretty evil.

Look, if you can resist the urge to buy into the auto-reply talking points that get thrown around when the subject of abortion is brought up you may see that Wendy Davis latched on to this Bill for the national spotlight. She rode the wave of popularity and it carried her through the primaries in March.

In my view, HB 2 protects women. They can still have abortions. They’re just going to be safer, cleaner, and more humane for the fetus. I just don’t see how that’s a war waged against women. For her to oppose this bill by creating such a media spectacle leads me to believe that she is an opportunist trying to curry favor within her party. Which of course led to lot’s of financial contributions to her campaign. There you have it. Money and attention are powerful motivators.

Oh, and she later loosens her view on the 20 week abortion ban here. Coincidentally, right before the primaries. Hmmm, imagine that. #opportunist

In her defense, she’s not the the only person or politician who has ever been motivated by money or attention. That doesn’t excuse her or anyone else’s behavior and it certainly doesn’t inspire me to support her run for Governor.

You might say that her opponent Greg Abbott could be called an opportunist for suing a tree service company and the homeowner who owned the oak tree that fell on him while he was jogging on a windy day. To me it’s apples and oranges. His medical expenses following the accident are a legitimate complaint.
